Musings

(Accessibility)

We have commonly heard that CSS is what makes a website accessible, though that's far from the truth. CSS is a nice start to increasing the accessibility of your website, but it's only one step in a marathon.

We go through many steps to make websites accessible. Besides using CSS and good coding practices, it also requires doing things like avoiding deprecated elements, defining non-textual items on pages, and making sure that semantic HTML, proper color combinations, and a few extra frills are thrown in for good measure.

When we design websites, we always validate to Section 508 and WAI standards. In addition, we use color analyzers to make sure that pages can be read by those with difficulties distinguishing colors. We define background colors to elements with image backgrounds in case the image doesn't load or the user has images disabled. We describe what is in images for those with visual impairments, and we even write our coding in an order that allows those with disabilities to see, hear, or find the option to customize their experience easier.

Where possible, we also try to a include browser based style sheet switcher so all users can easily change things such as font size or color to better serve them. This is similar to the three letters on the upper right of this page. We do this so individuals with visual impairments have an easier time reading our pages. If this is not possible, we try to include alternate style sheets so users who need it will still be able to switch the style.

All of these things are important to make the most out of your site and to serve your customers. A little extra time goes a long way to show your clients that you care.
